The Pilbara |
The Pilbara contains some of the hottest country on Earth. Its Iron Ore and Natural Gas deposits account for much of Western Australia's prosperity. Enormous machinery is used to tear the Earth apart. It is isolated and desolate place, but company towns such as Tom Price which litter the area are immensely wealthy. Be warned this area is remote and if you are driving yourself it is necessary to take plenty of extra water (around 20 litres per person). The beautiful Karijini National Park is an exceptional place. It is the second largest national park in the state. The park is rich in wildlife, including the rare Rothschild's rock wallaby and the almost mythical ningaui (a type of lizard). The park is particularly well known for its spectacular gorges. The virtual ghost town of Wittenoom, is the tourist centre of the gorge region. The streets and airstrip were once paved with blue asbestos, which unsurprisingly lead to its decline. Its population is now a meagre 50 people. © Travellers Club 1997-2005. All Rights Reserved.
