Shark Bay, Monkey Mia

Shark Bay has World Heritage status, one of only 12 places on Earth to have satisfied all the criteria for the listing. The Stromatolites alongside the Dolphins of Monkey Mia rate as the major attraction. Stromatolites have evolved over 3 1/2 billion years. The Pool at Hamelin, is one of the most easily accessible site and most spectacular example in the world, of these unusual phenomenon.

The Shark Bay area also contains the Francois Peron National Park. A truly magnificent national park. It is known for its arid scenery and land locked salt lakes. Cape Peron is a good place to spot Dugongs, turtles, and Manta Rays.

Monkey Mia has developed popularity due to the sheltered wading depth waters of Shark Bay where it has become possible through encouragement to feed the wild dolphins. Feeding started in the 1960's when a woman from one of the fishing camps began feeding one of the dolphins from a boat. Other dolphins soon appeared also wanting to be fed. The dolphins average 4m in length and have the ability to keep pace with the fastest craft. The dolphins are definitely the most famous aspect of Shark Bay, there is a great deal of more to be seen.
